How to let Bedrock players join your Java server
Java and Bedrock speak different network protocols, but a plugin called Geyser translates between them. Here's how crossplay works and how to set it up.
How it works
Geyser runs on a Java server and accepts Bedrock connections on a second (UDP) port, translating them so Bedrock players appear in the Java world. Floodgate lets Bedrock players join with their Xbox account, without owning Java Edition. Their names get a prefix, usually a dot, so they can't clash with Java names.
The easy way on Jump
- Create a server and pick Bedrock. It runs Paper with Geyser and Floodgate already installed and gets a Bedrock port.
- Java players join the address as usual.
- Bedrock players open Play → Servers → Add Server and enter the address and port shown in the panel's Overview.
Setting it up yourself
- Run Paper (or another plugin server) on a version Geyser supports.
- Install Geyser-Spigot and Floodgate from geysermc.org into
plugins/. - Open UDP port 19132 (or the port in
plugins/Geyser-Spigot/config.yml) on your host. - Restart and have Bedrock players connect to that address and port.
Consoles
Xbox, PlayStation and Switch only list Featured Servers and can't add their own. The usual way around it is BedrockConnect: set the console's DNS to a public BedrockConnect server, open any Featured Server, and a server list appears where you can type an address. The joining guide walks through it.
Things that differ for Bedrock players
- Some Java-only features, like certain redstone timings and custom item textures, look or behave a little differently.
- Plugins that use Java client mods won't work for Bedrock players.
- Whitelist Bedrock players by their prefixed name, for example
.Steve, or with Floodgate'sfwhitelistcommand.
Questions
Do Bedrock players need to buy Java?
No. With Floodgate they join with their Xbox (Microsoft) account.
Can I add mods to a crossplay server?
Geyser runs on plugin servers. Mods that add new blocks don't show properly to Bedrock players, so crossplay servers usually stick to plugins.
