How to whitelist your Minecraft server

A whitelist keeps your server to the people you invite. It takes a minute, and it's the best protection against random griefers finding your address.

How to

Turn on the whitelist

  1. Add yourself and your friends first, or you'll lock yourselves out: run whitelist add YourName in the console for each player.
  2. Run whitelist on.
  3. Check the list with whitelist list.

On Jump, the Players page has a Whitelist tab to add names and Settings has the whitelist switch, so you don't need commands at all.

Give yourself operator

Operators can use commands like /gamemode and /tp in game. In the console run op YourName, or use Make operator on the panel's Players page. Only op people you trust: they can do almost anything.

Ban, kick and unban

  • kick Name reason: removes someone now; they can rejoin.
  • ban Name reason: keeps them out. pardon Name undoes it.
  • ban-ip Name: bans their IP too, for people who make new accounts.

Whitelisting Bedrock players

On a crossplay server Bedrock players have a prefix, usually a dot: whitelist .Steve, not Steve. With Floodgate, fwhitelist add Steve works too.

Questions

Why does it say I'm not whitelisted?

The whitelist is on and your exact name isn't on it. Add it from the console or panel; names are case-insensitive but must be spelled right.

Does the whitelist work while the server is off?

Yes. Changes are written to whitelist.json and apply when it starts.
