How to install plugins on your Minecraft server

Plugins add commands, protection, economies and minigames without players installing anything. Here's how to add them, set them up and keep them working.

How to

1. Run plugin software

Plugins need Paper (recommended), Purpur or Spigot. Vanilla Minecraft and mod loaders like Fabric and Forge don't run Bukkit plugins. On Jump, Java servers start on Paper; you can check or change it in Settings → Software & version.

2. Install from the catalog

  1. Open Plugins & mods in the panel.
  2. Search for a plugin, for example EssentialsX or LuckPerms. Results come from Modrinth and are filtered to your server's version.
  3. Click Install, then restart the server.

Or upload a plugin yourself

  1. Download the plugin's .jar from a trusted source: Modrinth, Hangar (PaperMC), SpigotMC or the author's GitHub releases.
  2. In Files, open the plugins folder and upload the .jar (or use SFTP).
  3. Restart the server. The console prints each plugin as it enables.

Avoid random download sites and "cracked" premium plugins: they're the usual way malware gets onto servers.

3. Configure it

After its first start, a plugin makes a folder such as plugins/Essentials/ with a config.yml. Edit it in Files, then restart or use the plugin's reload command (for example /essentials reload). Plugins with permissions, like most commands, use a permissions plugin such as LuckPerms to decide who can do what.

Plugins most servers start with

  • EssentialsX: homes, warps, spawn, kits, messages.
  • LuckPerms: ranks and permissions.
  • GriefPrevention or WorldGuard: protect builds and areas.
  • WorldEdit: build fast.
  • CoreProtect: see and roll back who broke what.
  • Geyser and Floodgate: let Bedrock players join (already set up on Jump Bedrock servers).

If a plugin doesn't load

  • Check the console for a red error mentioning the plugin.
  • Unsupported API version: the plugin is for a different Minecraft version. Get the matching release.
  • Unknown dependency: install the plugin it depends on (often Vault or ProtocolLib).

Questions

Do players need to install plugins?

No. Plugins only run on the server; players join with normal Minecraft.

Can I use plugins and mods together?

Not on one normal server. Hybrid software such as Arclight or Mohist tries to run both, but it's less stable; pick plugins or mods when you can.

Is /reload safe?

Avoid the server-wide /reload: many plugins break after it. Restart the server, or use a plugin's own reload command.
