How to use your own domain for a Minecraft server

`play.yourname.com` is easier to share than a long hosted address. Setting it up is one DNS record at the place you bought the domain.

How to

CNAME or SRV?

  • CNAME points your name at the server's address. It only works when the server has an address of its own on the default port (25565), and the server doesn't care which name players typed.
  • SRV tells Minecraft the real address and port to connect to, and Minecraft then connects as if players had typed that address. Use it when your host gave you an address with a port on the end, like 1.2.3.4:25601, or when many servers share one address and are told apart by name, as on Jump.

Bedrock doesn't read SRV records, so Bedrock players type the address and port either way.

On Jump

  1. At your registrar or DNS host, add an SRV record: service _minecraft, protocol _tcp, name play (some DNS hosts want it as one name: _minecraft._tcp.play), priority 0, weight 5, port 25565, target your server's address, like yourname.play.jumphosting.cloud.
  2. Wait for DNS. It usually works within minutes, and at most within an hour.

Java players then join with play.yourname.com, no port, and there's nothing to set in the panel. A CNAME on its own won't work on Jump: servers share addresses and are found by name, and with a CNAME the name players connect with is your domain. Bedrock players keep using the address and port shown on Overview. The custom domain guide has more detail.

Questions

It says "Unknown host" or "No Jump server at play.yourname.com".

Minecraft didn't find the SRV record: DNS hasn't caught up yet, or the record is wrong. Check it's an SRV record (not a CNAME) named _minecraft._tcp.play (not play.yourname.com.yourname.com), pointing at your server's address, and give it a little longer.

Can I use the bare domain, like yourname.com?

Yes. Name the SRV record _minecraft._tcp without the play, and players join with yourname.com.
