How to change your server's settings (server.properties)
Most of what makes your server yours lives in one file, server.properties. Here are the settings people change most, and how to change them without breaking anything.
Where it is
server.properties sits in the server's main folder. Change it while the server is stopped, or restart afterwards: the server reads it only when it starts, and may overwrite your edits if it's running.
On Jump, the common settings are in Settings in the panel, and you can edit the whole file in Files.
The settings people change most
- `gamemode`: survival, creative, adventure or spectator for new players. Existing players keep theirs; change them with
/gamemode. - `difficulty`: peaceful, easy, normal or hard. Also changeable live with
/difficulty hard. - `max-players`: how many can be online at once.
- `pvp`:
falsestops players hurting each other. - `motd`: the line shown under your server in the list.
- `white-list`:
truelets only whitelisted players join. - `hardcore`: one life; dead players become spectators.
- `spawn-protection`: the radius around spawn that only ops can build in (set
0to turn it off). - `view-distance` and `simulation-distance`: how far players see and how far the world is active. Lower them if the server lags.
Changing the seed or world type
level-seed and level-type (for example a flat or amplified world) only apply when a world is generated. Changing them does nothing to an existing world. Set them, then make a new world: on Jump, Reset world in Settings, which backs up first on paid plans. To keep the old world, download it first.
Changes you can make with commands instead
/gamerule keepInventory true: keep items on death./gamerule playersSleepingPercentage 1: one player sleeping skips the night./gamerule doFireTick false: fire doesn't spread./difficulty,/defaultgamemodeand/setworldspawnchange settings without a restart.
The server.properties guide lists every common setting and its default.
Questions
I changed server.properties but nothing happened.
Restart the server; it only reads the file on start. If it was running, it may have saved its own copy over yours, so stop it, edit, then start.
How do I put my server in creative?
Set gamemode=creative (and force-gamemode=true so it applies to players who've joined before), then restart.
