How to install a modpack on your Minecraft server
A modpack is a loader, a Minecraft version and a few hundred mods and configs that have to match exactly. Here's how to get one onto a server without hours of fixing crashes.
How much memory a modpack needs
- Light packs (under 100 mods, vanilla-plus style): 2 to 4 GB.
- Medium packs (100 to 200 mods): 4 to 6 GB.
- Big kitchen-sink packs (All the Mods, Create packs, Prominence): 6 to 8 GB or more.
The pack's page often lists a recommended amount. Running short gives long freezes and out-of-memory crashes.
The one-click way on Jump
- Open Modpacks in the panel (paid plans).
- Search Modrinth or CurseForge and pick the pack and version.
- Click Install. Jump backs up the server, switches it to the pack's loader and version, and installs the pack's server files. CurseForge's official server pack is used when the pack has one.
- Start the server when it's done.
Jump warns you before installing a pack whose recommended memory is far above your plan, so you don't find out by crashing.
The manual way, on any host
- On the pack's CurseForge or Modrinth page, look for a Server Pack download and get the one matching the version players will use.
- Set the server to the same loader and Minecraft version the pack uses.
- Upload the server pack's
mods, configand other folders over SFTP. Don't upload client-only mods (shaders, minimaps, Sodium). - Start the server and read the console for errors.
Getting players on the pack
Players install the same pack and version in the CurseForge app, the Modrinth App or Prism Launcher, then join the server address from that instance. If the server updates the pack, everyone updates too.
Questions
Can I run a modpack on a free server?
Small packs can run on 2 GB if you set them up by hand. One-click modpacks are on paid plans, which also have the memory most packs need.
Will updating the pack keep my world?
Usually, yes, if it's the same Minecraft version. Jump backs up before every modpack change, so you can restore if an update breaks something.
Why does it say mods are missing when I join?
Your game and the server have different pack versions. Install the exact version the server runs.
