An exaroton alternative

exaroton charges for the time your server is actually running, which is a clever model. If you'd rather start free and know your bill in advance, here's how Jump compares.

Comparison

How exaroton works

On exaroton you buy credits and the server uses them for every hour it's online, more for more memory. A server that's only up on weekends costs very little; one that's up all month costs more, and if the credits run out the server stops.

Its prices and rules can change, so check exaroton's own site for the current rates.

How Jump does it

  • A free plan. 2 GB, no card, no credits. It sleeps after 15 minutes with nobody online and wakes when someone joins, so you don't pay for idle time either.
  • Flat prices when you want more. Paid plans are a fixed $4.99, $9.99, $14.99 or $19.99 a month (2 to 8 GB), always on, with automatic backups. Weekly billing is there too.
  • Join to wake. A sleeping Jump server starts when a friend joins from Minecraft, without anyone opening a website.
  • Plugins, mods and crossplay. Paper plugins, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge mods, and Bedrock players through Geyser.

Which one fits

If you play in short bursts and want lots of memory just for those hours, pay-as-you-go can work out cheaper. If you want something free for a small group, or a predictable bill for a server that's always up, Jump is simpler.

Jump's servers are in the US (US East and US West). If your players are in Europe, a host with European locations will give them a lower ping.

Moving your world

  1. Download your world from exaroton's file manager or over SFTP.
  2. Create a server on Jump with the same software (Paper, Fabric, Forge…) and version.
  3. Stop it, upload the world with Upload world in Files, and copy over plugins/ or mods/ and their configs.
  4. Start it and join.

Questions

How long does a sleeping server take to wake?

About a minute after the first person joins. On a paid plan it doesn't sleep at all.

Can I change plan later?

Yes, any time in Settings → Plan. Your world and address stay the same.

Is Jump affiliated with exaroton?

No. exaroton is a separate company; this page compares the two from Jump's side.
